Fewer people with mental health issues may end up in Winnebago County court.
District Attorney Christian Gossett is looking to set up a diversion program that would allow police officers and case workers to identify those in need of help at the time of an arrest.
He says those people wouldn’t automatically be taken to jail.
Those placed in the diversion program would be monitored by the DA’s office and those that stay with their treatment would avoid criminal charges.
