A Republican lawmaker from Howard believes he’s making his final push to build a 1,200 bed prison in rural Brown County.
Representative David Steffen wants to shut down the Green Bay Correctional Institution in Allouez and build a new state-of-the-art prison facility.
He submitted his plan to the state’s budget committee.
Steffen says the current prison needs more than $200 million in repairs.
He feels a new prison would cost between $230 and $290 million.
He also points to an economic impact study by St. Norbert College on the property which says it can produce over $100 million of economic development and over 1000 jobs for the village of Allouez.
