The building next door to the fire scene in downtown De Pere is off-limits, until engineers can make sure there aren’t any structural issues.
Fire Chief Alan Matzke says the city’s building inspector technically condemned it, so no one would be allowed inside. He says an engineer will have to go through the building, to make sure it’s safe.
A large, historic building burned to the ground at the corner of South Broadway and George streets yesterday.
Turba-Schroeder Photography is using the building next door, and there are a few apartments on the second floor. Matzke says unfortunately, the photography business had much of its equipment in the burned-down building. The upstairs apartments were also damaged.
