A proposal to build a new jail in Calumet County is going to the full county board next week.
Plans for the $35 million project are progressing. The county board’s Administrative Services Committee is now backing the proposal. It calls for replacing the current jail with a larger facility and renovating part of the courthouse. The new jail would have a pod system with 89 beds. It could be expanded to 128 beds.
The current facility was built in 1976 and there are 54 beds. The jail would be built next to the courthouse.
The full county board could vote on the proposal next Tuesday.
