Outagamie County leaders are planning to debate a half-cent sales tax tonight.
A study shows the proposal could generate $20 million in new revenue in the first year.
County Board Chair Jeff Nooyen of Grand Chute wants to use seven million of that to lower property taxes. He says county staffers took that into consideration during the study. He says they researched several counties with sales tax, and they liked Sheboygan County’s policy the best. He says they have a proven track record of reducing property taxes.
Sheboygan County’s tax rate is down from 5.65 in 2017 to 5.30 this year.
Tonight’s meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. at the county administration building in downtown Appleton.
