People in Outagamie County will start paying a half-cent sales tax at the beginning of next year.
The county board signed off on the proposal, 28-4, Tuesday night.
County Board Chair Jeff Nooyen of Grand Chute wants to use the projected $20 million dollars in revenue in the first year to cut property taxes. He says property owners would save money overall, because of that.
Supporters also plan to pay off the county’s debt, and provide funding to communities and school districts.
Unless some county board members change their votes, the majority is veto-proof if County Executive Tom Nelson decides to go that route. He opposes the sales tax, and he plans to make an announcement soon.
With Outagamie County off the list, there would only be five counties left in the state without a half-cent tax. One of them is Winnebago County.
