Low pay for public prosecutors is leading the top attorney for violent crimes in Winnebago County to resign.
Deputy District Attorney Scott Ceman feels he can’t afford to stay on the job. Ceman supervises eight other prosecutors, and he’s been with the DA’s office for 14 years.
He made just over $69,000 last year.
Ceman wrote a letter to Governor Evers and Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh to explain why he was quitting. He says they were shocked at his salary. He says it’s really kind of embarrassing to put out what his wage has been. But, he believes it’s really the only way to show them the problem.
Ceman’s last day will be June 7th, and he’ll go into private practice. He plans to open a criminal defense firm.
