Outagamie County’s leader is using his veto pen on a proposed half-cent county sales tax.
County Executive Tom Nelson believes it’s a regressive tax that would hurt seniors, people on a fixed income, and working families. He thinks the sales tax would do more harm than good.
The county board approved the tax on a 28-4 vote last week.
Supporters plan to spend the $20 million in sales tax revenue from the first year to lower property taxes and pay off debt. Communities and school districts would also get a share of the money.
A county study found the average property owner would save at least $50 overall, because of the cut in property taxes.
