County Board Chair Jeff Nooyen is confident the board will override the sales tax veto.
He’s also disputing Nelson’s concerns about the impact on seniors. Nooyen says in order to pay $100 in county sales taxes someone would have to spend $20,000 on taxable items in a year. He points to his 91-year-old father-in-law. He says he doesn’t pay any sales tax on groceries, medicine or rent. He says those are the primary thing that demographic spend money on.
Nooyen says the board will vote to try to override the veto next Tuesday. Two-thirds of members at the meeting would need to agree to put the tax in place. The 28 votes at the last meeting were enough to do that.
