Green Bay city leaders hope the updates at Bay Beach will have a big economic impact.
The plans include a one-thousand foot sand beach and a boardwalk.
Mayor Eric Genrich hopes the changes will make that part of the city a destination. He says it’s an incredible cultural amenity, and also is an economic driver for greater Green Bay, Brown County, and for the state. Genrich says about three million people visit Bay Beach every year, and he hopes this will increase those numbers.
He points to the new location of the children’s museum nearby as another draw.
The beach project is estimated to cost $7 million. The city is borrowing $5 million of that.
City leaders hope grants and donations will cover the rest. They hope to break ground in the fall and they could open the beach by next summer.
