The death of an Appleton firefighter on a medical call is leading to talks around the state about how to protect first responders when they’re dealing with overdoses.
Driver-Engineer Mitch Lundgaard was shot at the downtown transit center last month, and Police Officer Paul Christensen was wounded.
Investigators say 47-year-old Ruben Houston fired at them, after he was revived using Narcan.
Outagamie County District Attorney Melinda Tempelis says the state attorney general’s office is involved. She believes changes will be made to allow responders to search patients. She says patients often have weapons on them in those situations.
Tempelis says after Lundgaard’s death, another department in the state searched a drug overdose patient because of what happened in Appleton. She says that person had a gun.
