Appleton’s public works director thinks the city might be able to start banning train whistles in about two months.
The city made upgrades to various crossings along a rail line that cuts across the city, to meet the requirements for a quiet zone.
Director Paula Vandehey says they sent in their application a year ago, and they’ve been waiting for word from the Federal Railroad Administration.
She says they got Congressman Mike Gallagher involved. She says they were getting frustrated with the long wait, and their consultant told them it was abnormal.
But Vandehey says the agency recently reached out to the consultant with some questions. She says the consultant answered them right away and she’s hopeful the approval will come soon.
