Massage businesses in Appleton might have to get a license from the city.
Alderwoman Patti Coenen wants to create the requirement so police and city staff can inspect them at any time. She’s asking the city to set a low cost for the license. The proposal comes while Appleton police are investigating two massage parlors for prostitution.
Coenen says if they’re doing things legally, it shouldn’t be an issue. She wants the fee to be low so it doesn’t negatively affect the business, but it would still give the city and police a way to make sure everything is fine.
Coenen says an owner of a spa asked her to set up licenses to make sure everyone is “above board” and “doing the right thing.”
Police say they busted the two parlors last week. They’re not releasing details yet because it’s an ongoing investigation. One of the massage businesses was in an office building at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Division Street on the north side.
