A Kaukauna leader is talking about why retention ponds don’t have gates around them.
Some people raised concerns after a 12-year-old boy drowned in one earlier this week.
Public Works Director John Sundelius says the ponds are designed so the depth increase gradually unlike pools that require barriers. He says pools have a sharp, vertical drop off that can make it difficult to get out of the water.
Sundelius believes a nearby apartment complex owns the pond where the boy drowned. He says they did have a sign warning not to go in the water. He says that’s not a regulation.
