The City of Menasha is doing a few things to make sure drinking water is safe.
Water Utility manager for Menasha Utilites Adam Smith says they know lead levels in some homes are above the EPA limits.
He says it’s not the water that’s bad, but there’s lead in some pipes that’s go from the water main to private homes. He says they have been testing replacement treatment systems and are waiting to hear back from the Wisconsin Public Service Commission on a potential program to help homeowners replace their service lines.
He estimates about 440 homes have lead pipes, and that money from the Wisconsin Public Service Commission would help them.
In the meantime, Smith says they’re sending out postcards to those people asking homeowners to let them inspect the pipes, so they can verify condition.
