The budget signed by Governor Evers doesn’t include one of his biggest initiatives — an expansion of Medicaid coverage.
Majority Republicans in the Legislature oppose accepting the federal funding and they scrapped the plan. Evers says he’s not giving up. He says he’ll continue to fight for Medicaid expansion through separate legislation, future budget bills, and other executive powers.
Evers says he considered vetoing the entire budget. But he believes the move would’ve created more of the same divisiveness and petty political theatrics that people are tired of seeing.
Evers made 78 vetoes in part to put another $90 million toward public schools.
