Kaukauna’s mayor plans to keep working with state lawmakers to look for ways to help pay for the repairs to the Veterans Memorial Lift Bridge.
Republicans included about $1.8 million in funding for the $2.2 million project.
Mayor Tony Penterman says the state pays about 80 percent of the costs for the draw bridges along the Fox River. He says that doesn’t take lift bridges into consideration.
The Coast Guard is ordering the bridge to be up-and-running by May of 2021. If the city would be forced to pay for the work, Penterman says it would eat up almost all of their capital budget for one year.
Governor Evers vetoed the funding.
