The leader of Kaukauna thinks the odds are better that the city will get some help to fix the Veterans Memorial Lift Bridge.
Governor Evers vetoed about $1.8 million in state funding last week.
Mayor Tony Penterman says he met with other city and state leaders along with the DOT secretary to go over options. He believes they’re optimistic about finding a funding source.
Penterman says he’s not sure if the state is going to pick up 80 percent of the cost. That’s how much the state covers for many bridge projects. He expects to know more in a couple of weeks.
The Coast Guard is ordering the city to fix the bridge by 2021.
If the state doesn’t pitch in, Kaukauna taxpayers could be on the hook for the entire $2.2 million price tag.
