An Oshkosh business group is proposing that the city put a wheel tax in place, instead of a transportation fee.
John Casper of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce thinks that would take care of the issue with special assessments for street projects.
The Common Council is looking for ways to help homeowners avoid a big bill.
Casper wants the city to leave the assessments in place for businesses and other property owners.
The wheel tax would be for vehicles that are under 8,000 pounds.
The proposed transportation fee would be based on the city’s stormwater charges. It would cost $4-50 a month per resident unit. The charge for businesses would largely depend on the size of their property.
