The weather warning sirens that go off during storms could be a thing of the past for several communities.
Outagamie County wants to transfer ownership to some communities by the beginning of next year.
The Grand Chute town board voted Tuesday to reject ownership.
Town chair Dave Schowalter says their three sirens are at the end of their 20 year life expectancy and it would cost $25,000 each to replace them.
He feels the county should get new ones first.
But County Executive Tom Nelson says if the communities don’t accept ownership the sirens will be taken down the first of the year.
The towns of Center and Dale also voted not to accept ownership.
Nelson says they have until August 15 to have a conversation or ask for an extension.
He says in the meantime the county will continue to invest in software for the sirens that stay up and more modern methods of providing severe weather alerts.
