A group is calling for action after eight teens were recently treated in the Milwaukee area for serious damage to their lungs.
Doctors at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin believe vaping could’ve led to their illnesses.
Dona Wininsky is a spokeswoman for the American Lung Association. She says the use of e-cigarettes in youth has risen 153% in the past four years. She says that’s an epidemic level.
Wininsky believes state lawmakers should add e-cigarettes to the statewide smoking ban and tax them the same way as regular cigarettes. The doctors at Children’s Hospital are still investigating the exact cause of the illnesses. But they say all of the teens reported using e-cigarettes in recent weeks or months.
