Governor Evers is calling for universal background checks for gun sales in the state.
He joined a number of Democratic lawmakers to introduce a bill that would add the requirement to sales at gun shows, and over the Internet. Evers says polls show a vast majority support the additional checks, so it’s “not a radical idea.”
The proposal calls for a fine of up to $10,000, and a jail sentence of up to nine months, if someone would sell a gun without getting a background check.
The bill would exempt sales to a gun dealer, a police officer, or member of the military. It also wouldn’t apply to guns classified as antiques, or a gift or inheritance to a family member.
Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said earlier today it’s “very unlikely” the Legislature will take up the bill.
