Appleton’s school board is going on the record, in opposition of Native American mascots.
Thirty-one districts in the state still have them, including Shiocton, Stockbridge and Weyauwega-Fremont.
Board President Kay Eggert says none of the Appleton schools have a Native American mascot. She believes it’s important to weigh in, because the district wants to have a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of their background or cultures.
There’s a proposed state law to ban the mascots. The Wausau school board started asking others around Wisconsin to support the bill.
