The Community First Champion Center in Grand Chute is ready to open.
The idea started to take shape six years ago.
Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Pam Seidl says they did a study on the need for an indoor facility, and then two more specific ones. By 2015, they were ready to propose a project, and 10 local communities agreed to raise the room tax.
Three percent of the hotel room tax was then set aside to pay for the more than $30 million project. Construction started in September of last year.
There’s space for basketball, volleyball, and hockey, and the center is expected to draw youth sports teams from around the region.
There’s a private ribbon cutting ceremony this afternoon.
The community will get a chance to tour the facility tomorrow, during an open house. It runs from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
