The Appleton school district’s rules for giving speeches at school events are staying in place.
Administrators created them over the summer, after school board member Alvin Dupree talked about his Christian faith during graduation at Appleton North High School.
Superintendent Judy Baseman says administrators have been reviewing speeches since the start of the school year. She says they talk with their attorneys if necessary when there are events with outside speakers.
Speakers have to swear under oath that they won’t deviate from their script.
The school board shot down an attempt to replace the rules, on a 5-2 vote last night.
