Firefighters saved several animals from a duplex in Fond du Lac late this morning.
Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says they were able to keep the fire from spreading from a first-floor bedroom in the 100 block of 8th Street. There were people on the second floor and they were able to get out safely.
Crews rescued several dogs and puppies, along with exotic birds, a lizard, and a hedgehog. Two exotic Sugar Gliders died.
The Red Cross is helping the 12 people living in the duplex.
O’Leary says the smoke alarms in the basement and on the first floor weren’t working.
