A proposal to turn Gabriel Furniture in downtown Appleton into apartments is taking a step forward.
The city council signed off on a development agreement Wednesday night.
The historic building on the corner of College Avenue and Morrison Street will be renovated. Two smaller buildings that are part of the storefront will be replaced by a three-story building.
Mayor Tim Hanna says the owners quietly put the building up for sale, while continuing to run their store. He says they were looking for a developer to “do the right thing” for the downtown.
Commercial Horizons owner Paul Klister is the lead developer.
The city is offering about $900,000 in TIF money, and the final amount will depend on the final value of the property.
