Some members of the state’s largest business lobby are concerned about closing the dark store loophole.
It lets big-box retailers claim their property tax assessments should be similar to a closed store.
Senior Vice President of Government Relations at Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce Scott Manley says it would give local assessors an opportunity to unfairly increase taxes. He says it would ultimately raise the cost of doing business in the state, which would get passed along to customers.
Critics of the loophole say it puts more of the tax burden on homeowners. Governor Evers included a provision to close the loophole in his state budget.
