The harsh winter could have an impact on the deer population.
DNR wildlife biologist Jeff Pritzl says they look at things like snow depth and temperatures to predict the deer population growth in the spring.
The agency focuses on the northern third of the state. Pritzl says right now they’re in the moderate category, but by the end of March they could move into the severe range.
Pritzl says the number will affect preliminary harvest quotas for the upcoming hunting season. He says right now deer are in a more sedentary state so people shouldn’t try to help by feeding them. He believes high-energy foods like corn would do more harm than good.
