Part of the Shopko Plaza site in Menasha is closer to becoming a redevelopment district.
Mayor Don Merkes says the city council is agreeing to provide incentives to revamp the strip mall along Highway 10-441.
He says a developer will also tear down the former Garden View Restaurant, and replace it with a building for three businesses. One of them is Starbucks.
Merkes thinks people understand the strip mall is tired and it could use a facelift. He hopes the project creates a “wow factor” at one of the gateways to the city.
The TIF district doesn’t include the soon-to-close Shopko store. Merkes says the owner of the rest of the site is talking with the owner of the Shopko building. He believes making improvements to the northern part of the plaza will help generate interest in the Shopko site.
