The leader of the Oneida Nation is calling on state lawmakers to eliminate the remaining Native American high school mascots.
Tehassi Hill also wants them to protect the environment, and aggressively fight chronic wasting disease in deer.
He gave the annual State of the Tribes address to Governor Evers and the Legislature this afternoon.
Hill says 31 schools in the state still have Native American mascots, and he believes that encourages racist behavior. He also raised concerns about drug addiction and poverty, among tribal members.
He says the tribes support Evers’ proposal to expand Medicaid coverage.
