The state attorney general hopes a new bill will prevent future backlogs of sexual assault kits.
Attorney General Josh Kaul is trying to set timelines and protocols for victims, officers, and medical professionals. He says it would also give people an option to report the assault. If they didn’t want to, the kit would be stored for up to 10 years.
Kaul believes the law sends a message that there will never be another backlog of untested kit in the state. He’s confident lawmakers will pass it.
