The proposed design for a street on Appleton’s east side includes what’s called a “buffer” for bike lanes.
The city plans to rebuild a stretch of Newberry Street from Schaefer Street to the Highway 441 overpass in two years.
Traffic Engineer Eric Lom says they’re looking to include a gap of two-and-a-half feet between the lanes for cars and bikes. He says the industry has discovered it’s important to provide a higher level of safety, and this is a notch up from conventional bike lanes.
The plans would remove on-street parking along that part of Newberry Street. City officials could still consider indented parking in specific spots. The city council will take up the design on Wednesday.
