Governor Evers isn’t going to let Brendan Dassey out of prison.
Dassey and his attorneys were asking for a pardon, or for the governor to drop the rest of the convicted murderer’s sentence.
The governor’s pardon board is denying the request, saying Dassey doesn’t meet the standards for a pardon. The board says he hasn’t been out of prison for five years, and he’s a registered sex offender.
A jury found Dassey guilty of the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. He’s serving a life sentence, and he’s not eligible for parole for 29 years.
Dassey’s attorneys argue his confession was coerced, and there’s no physical evidence that ties him to the crime. He was 16 when he was interviewed by investigators.
Dassey’s uncle, Steven Avery, is also serving a life sentence, but he’ll never be eligible for parole.
The attorneys for Dassey believe the pardon board should review the petition on its merits. They released a statement, saying Evers isn’t bound by the board’s rules, and he has the power to drop the rest of Dassey’s sentence.
