Some state lawmakers are proposing bills dealing with deadly force, and investigations of police shootings, in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
Democratic Sen. Latonya Johnson of Milwaukee wants police officers to use more de-escalating tactics, first. She believes there should be separate standards for the most vulnerable, including the elderly and people with mental illness.
Republican Sen. Van Wanggaard of Racine is proposing to create an independent board that would investigate deadly police shootings. Currently, the state justice department handles those cases, unless departments have an agreement with each other to handle them.
Wanggaard says the new board would run a parallel investigation.
Both were on Up Front yesterday morning.
