The Environmental Protection Agency is removing the lower Menominee River from its “area of concern” list.
Administrator Andrew Wheeler says remediation efforts on the former Ansul Fire Protection site in Marinette helped lower arsenic levels in the river. That work started in the early 1990s.
Wheeler says the cleanup will also help water quality in the Great Lakes.
The lower Menominee is the first Wisconsin river to be removed from the “area of concern” list.
