The Village of Little Chute will not consider allowing residents to keep backyard chickens. The Village Board votes against drafting a proposed ordinance allowing for the keeping of fowl. Trustee John Elrick says there are plenty of other options to do so.
“If you want chickens, go to Kaukauna, Appleton or Kimberly or Freedom,” he said. “Or wherever you can have chickens. I’m not in favor of having staff spending time on this. We’ve already talked about it three times. ”
It’s the third time that the board has voted down drafting an ordinance since 2018. Board Chairman Michael Vanden Berg says surrounding communities that allow chickens have seen little interest since then.
“Those that have made ordinances, it looks like they’ve made enough conditions in it,” he said. “Where it’s not worthwhile to have chickens. And I guess I don’t want to go through that process where I have a $500 fee and an annual inspection. If you want to have critters, go where you’re allow to have critters.”
Village officials say they have continued to hear from Little Chute residents interested in keeping chickens for egg-laying.
