APPLETON, Wis–The Appleton Area School District continues to struggle with chronic absenteeism at its high schools. After a slight dip in the 2023-24 school year, the absentee rate at the three high schools has gone back above 25% for the first semester of this year.
Superintendent Greg Hartjes says that is why he continues to press the city of Appleton to restore a truancy ordinance………….
While he doesn’t support writing tickets to kids that miss class, School Board member Nick Ross hopes the city can provide some help………..
Appleton’s Safety and Licensing Committee will re-visit the district’s request for a truancy ordinance later this month.
