APPLETON, Wis–The death of a co-owner has created operational problems for an Appleton bar. Hank Grishaber from Hank and Karen’s on John Street passed away last month following a battle with cancer.
He was the sole owner listed on the bar’s liquor license, meaning they are not able to serve alcohol until his wife, Karen, is put on the license. The earliest that could take place would be July 16th, when the Appleton Common Council meets again.
In a post made to Hank and Karens Pub & Grill’s Facebook page on June 19th, they shared:
Sorry all for the unexpected and super quick closure tonight. As we were meeting with our attorney today to get everything in order with Hank’s sudden and very unexpected passing. We received a phone call stating that our alcohol license is voided as it only had Hank’s name, even though, Karen is an owner.
That being said, it’s not as simple as a name change/transfer. It has to be approved by the city committee and counsel – unfortunately for us, all June meetings were canceled…meaning we can’t have it approved until the next meeting, which is scheduled for July 16th. Praying that meeting isn’t canceled! We appreciate the understanding and continued support during this hiccup (that we did not expect).
Karen has been tossing up the idea of ‘possibly’ opening as a “dry bar” next week with a full menu, 11am-9pm. Until she decides – we will have curbside pickup available; 11am-9pm, Monday-Friday!We’d appreciate the phone calls tomorrow for Friday Fish, your favorite sandwiches and sides!!!Call us at 920-731-1265!Thank you again for understanding and please share!

In the meantime, other local bars are offering help. The Lake Park Tavern in Menasha and the Hometown Pub in Kimberly are offering free drink coupons with the purchase of a carry-out meal at Hank and Karen’s.
