MADISON, Wis. — The new state budget calls for the closure of the Green Bay Correctional Institution by the end of 2029.
The package includes money for decommissioning the prison, which opened in 1898 and has come under criticism for the conditions in which inmates live.
The village of Allouez has been asking for the prison to close so the land can be used for redevelopment.
The Legislature and the governor must still both approve the budget.
