As the days get shorter and colder, many people experience changes in mood and energy.
In this month’s Focus on Health with ThedaCare, Gregg Brewer, Mental Health Clinician with ThedaCare Behavioral Health, explains that some may feel the “winter blues,” while others develop Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)—a type of depression linked to reduced sunlight that can affect sleep, appetite, energy, and overall motivation.
As Gregg shares, early signs can include fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or withdrawing from social activities. Here are some small daily habits you can include,
-
Spend time outside
-
Maintain a regular sleep schedule
-
Stay physically active
-
Practice mindfulness or meditation
-
Connect with friends and family
-
Eat balanced meals to support mood and energy
Open conversations also play an important role. Checking in with others and seeking help when symptoms persist for more than two weeks, interfere with daily life, or feel overwhelming—is key. SAD is real, common, and treatable, and support is available.
For help or more information about mental health services, ThedaCare Behavioral Health offers a variety of options, including Walk-in Care in Neenah, open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. More details are available at ThedaCare.org.
