(NEW LONDON, WI) — The city of New London begins recovery efforts as floodwaters subside.
The Wolf River crested at 15-feet over the weekend and is slowly receding. Don Goodreau with the New London Street Department says a drier forecast this week may allow property owners to begin damage assessments.
New London has implemented a curfew for the area of Spruce Street, North Water Street, and U-S Highway 45 because of ongoing flooding. Those who do not live in that area are not allowed there between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM until further notice.
Winneconne officials have started sandbagging in anticipation of flooding.
The Wolf River continues to rise between Lakes Winneconne and Butte des Morts. Over the weekend, many riverside docks were submerged. The river is expected to crest later this week.
Meanwhile in Omro, officials are planning for flooding in Scott Park, as Fox River levels are rising as well. There will also be a Highway 21 detour using Jackson Avenue and Huron Street should water come over the road surface.
And there will be no school this week in Shiocton.
The school district is canceling classes at all grade levels through Friday. Officials say the time off will allow families to deal with this month’s historic flooding.
No virtual learning will be conducting, as not all families have internet access. Classes in Shiocton will resume on Monday, April 27th.
Superintendent Garrett Zimmerman says the district will apply for a waiver from the state Department of Public Instruction to not have to make up all of the lost class time.
