(OSHKOSH, WI) — Oshkosh Police will have more enforcement power over pub crawls.
The common council this week amends the Oshkosh Municipal Code to hold tenants accountable for nuisance parties and pub crawls, which are considered to be unsanctioned events.
County Supervisor Casen Frasseto, whose district includes U-W Oshkosh, questions the need for the ordinance.
Oshkosh Police Chief Dean Smith says the ordinance changes allow law enforcement to act before nuisance parties get out of hand.
Chief Dean Smith also says the ordinance changes are needed to take action in situations that quickly become public safety risks.
Council member Karl Buelow supports that goal–reluctantly.
Mayor Matt Mugeraur questions whether the changes hold the right people accountable when nuisance parties go out of control.
Council member Joseph Stephenson says the changes will be monitored, although he agrees they are needed.
Common council member Paul Esslinger says tenants alone should be held accountable for events that go out of control.
The ordinance changes exempt landlords from responsibility for nuisance parties and pub crawls held on their rental properties.
