Some local volunteers for the American Red Cross are home after helping with the Hurricane Harvey relief effort.
They went to south Texas last month.
Bob Mayer helped set up a mega-shelter in a convention center. He says they’re built to hold over 1,000 people. He says they expected 5,000 people to show up, but 10,000 did.
Wisconsin Public Service also sent 24 workers to restore power in wake of Hurricane Irma.
WPS Field Manager Jon Joanis says the job presented new challenges. He says alligators, snakes and other creatures were displaced by the rising water.
Joanis says crews worked 16-hour shifts for 11 days straight.
