APPLETON, WI — Residents are being asked to take the bus and honor a civil rights icon. This is Transit Equity Day, which promotes safe, reliable and equal access to public transportation. February 3rd is also the birthday of Rosa Parks whose arrest for failure to give up her seat led to civil rights boycott and a recognition of equal access to public transportation. Valley Transit General Manager Ron McDonald says such a commemoration is part of ongoing public dialogue and service showcase.
“This is just a good opportunity for Valley Transit to talk with our community and talk about how we connect the Fox Cities, ” McDonald said. “You know, really, equity in transit is what we deal with every day. This isn’t something that’s new to us. This is something we’ve been doing in my career in excess of 30 years. It’s been the top priority for us. So this opportunity is really an ability to share our story and really get people to try the bus.”
MacDonald says Transit Equity Day shows public transportation’s vital role in the region’s economy.
