GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay City Council votes to remove recording devices in city hall and destroy all recording data, pending the outcome of ongoing litigation.
The council also passes an ordinance amendment giving the council authority over recording devices.
Last week, Brown County Judge Marc Hammer issued a temporary injunction ordering a stop to recording of people in public areas of city hall. That was in response to a lawsuit filed by State Senator Andre Jacque against Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich, which claims the installation of devices in public areas violates the law.
City officials say the devices were installed two years ago following incidents of verbal abuse against municipal employees. Critics point out the city council never approved that, and there were no signs posted until recently to inform the public they were being recorded.
