APPLETON, Wis. — Members of the Appleton Common Council express concerns about a proposed truancy ordinance reinstatement.
The Appleton Area School District is asking the city to bring back the ordinance, which would allow police to issue citations to students who are habitually truant and whose families fail to work with the district on improving attendance.
Alder Vaya Jones thinks too many minority students would be punished for missing class…………….
Last week, the council’s Safety and Licensing Committee heard from single mother Angie Day, whose son was habitually truant his freshman year of high school and thinks the truancy ordinance would get him back in class…………
The Safety and Licensing Committee will get another update on the truancy ordinance next month.
