OSHKOSH, Wis. — The city of Oshkosh adopts a resolution on a temporary moratorium on new data center development. Common Council member Alec Lefeber, the resolution’s author, says it would accomplish three things.
Council member Paul Esslinger says further study is needed. He also says constituents he’s heard from have one feeling about data centers.
Lefeber also says while Oshkosh needs to act locally, the city must also think regionally.
Mayor Matt Mugerauer says he agrees with that concept.
Lefeber adds that residents in other Wisconsin communities are learning about the impacts as they’re being built.
Council member Brad Spanbauer says an MIT study shows the impact on the power grid is known in Europe.
Six common council members voted in favor of the moratorium resolution while one voted present. It now goes through the planning process before going back to the common council within 60 days.
