A nonprofit wants to help people in local homeless shelters who can afford to rent their own place, but can’t find one.
Pillars is receiving a $150,000 grant, over three years, from the Basic Needs Giving Partnership to launch the initiative.
Pillars Executive Director Joe Mauthe says people might face barriers with credit or past evictions. He says the single-room occupancy project is a way to get them out of a shelter and on the path toward being productive and independent.
Mauthe says they developed the program, after learning that one in three people in local homeless shelters can afford to rent their own place, but they have trouble finding one. He says they’ll also work closely with them, and hopefully they’ll eventually be able to get their own housing.
