Governor Evers is proposing an eight-cent increase in the gas tax, but he believes another change will actually lower gas prices.
It’s part of his first state budget that he introduced Thursday night.
Evers says the hike is necessary to improve the roads in the state.
Evers thinks people are paying an extra 14 cents a gallon because of the state’s mandatory-markup law on gas. He wants to repeal it.
The overall transportation plan would generate an additional $600 million. Evers says borrowing for road projects would be the lowest in over 20 years.
He’s also proposing a 10 percent increase in local transportation funding for streets and bridges.
Evers is pushing to increase fees for titles and heavy trucks as well. The $75 state vehicle registration fee wouldn’t change.
